Devanagari: आकाश ISO15919: ākāśa also written as akash
Commonly, sky is called akasha, but there is more to it. Akasha, meaning empty space, is one of the elements of pancha mahabhuta. This is the first gross element that is created during the process of srishti. In the Vedas, the Supreme Lord is also called Akasha.
