Devanagari: अंतःकरण ISO15919: aṁtaḥkaraṇa also written as antahkarana, antah-karan

The inner machinery consisting of the mind, the intellect and the tendencies of the mind caused by one's actions in past lives.

The doer of all activities is this antahakarana, the mind and intellect, but linked to the soul. The word antaha means "internal" and karana refers to the machine with which things are done. Thus, antahakarana is a single word denoting a single thing which manifests in two ways - mana, mind, and buddhi, intellect.

It is the only worker in the human being. According to God's law, all actions of the antahakarana done in a wakeful state are called karma. It is subservient to the jiva and is an eternal aide given by the Supreme Lord. That machinery is also called the mind or man (Devanagari: मन ISO15919: mana) and its nature is to be restless. Even while sleeping, the mind is active and creates dreams, except during deep sleep (sushupti).

There are two primary functions of this subtle machinery: 1. mana (Devanagari: मन ISO15919: mana) - when it creates a desire for something and weighs up the pros and cons, it is called the mind or mana. 2. buddhi or the intellect (Devanagari: बुद्धि ISO15919: buddhi) - when it takes a decision it is called the intellect or buddhi. Some say this machinery has two more functions: 3. chitta (Devanagari: चित्त ISO15919: citta) - when it thinks it is called chitta and 4. ahankaar (Devanagari: अहंकार ISO15919: ahaṁkāra) - when it gives rise to pride or ego, it is called ego or ahankaar.
