Devanagari: अवधूत ISO15919: avadhūta

One leading a renounced life of complete absorption in God, free from Vedic regulations, even those applying to a sanmyasi.

LEARN MORE

The defining characteristic of an avadhuta is that their state of continuous divine absorption places them beyond conventional rules and duties: they do not follow any Vedic regulations, including those strict rules applying to a samnyasi (monastic renunciate). Their actions are considered beyond the scope of prescribed rituals, and they might not follow any social decorum either.
