An offering to a Guru from a disciple to show gratitude. It can be monetary or anything else the Guru asks for.

A disciple is eternally indebted to the Guru and so he serves the Guru to please him. Still, there are some customary occasions for offering dakshina. Also, dakshina is given according to the teacher’s desire.
- To fructify the education into practical action every student offers dakshina to his teacher. This education can be either material or spiritual. For example, Eklavya offered dakshina to Guru Dronacharya, Shri Krishna offered dakshina to Guru Durvasa.
- When a Guru visits a devotees residence, devotees offer dakshina as a token of gratitude.
- After, giving a feast to Guru, the disciple gives dakshina.
