While literally translating to "servant" or "slave," in the context of bhaktiyoga, it denotes the eternal identity of the soul. The scriptures declare that every living being is eternally a dasa of God. This is not a state of forced subjection or slavery, but the natural, constitutional state of the soul. Just as wetness cannot be separated water, service of God is inseparable from the soul.
