Humans have the freedom of will to perform karma in any of the following four categories: karma - strict observance of all ritualistic actions specified by the Vedas and scriptures without devotion to God, vikarma - non-observance of Vedic karma specified in the scriptures as well as an absence of devotion to God, akarma or karma yoga - devotion to God with the mind and physical performance of ritualistic duties specified by the scriptures, karma samnyasa - devotion to God with the mind, without physical involvement in duties prescribed by the scriptures.

Karma also includes rites and rituals performed according to the instructions of the Vedas, also known as karma dharma and varnashram dharma. There are four sub-categories: nitya karma - routine actions, naimittika karma - causal actions, kamya karma - desire-bearing actions and prayashchitta karma - repentance actions.

Trikarma is another way of categorising karma.
