Literally meaning "frog in a well," it compares a frog stuck in a well to someone with limited knowledge or experience. The frog, knowing only the well, cannot imagine the vastness of the ocean unless someone from the outside tells it, earns its trust, helps it to come out and leads it to see the ocean for itself.

Similarly, a soul with limited understanding, cannot grasp the concept of God. But if that soul trusts a Saint, accepts the Saint as his Guru, learns from him, follows the Guru’s guidance, and practises spiritual discipline (sadhana), then the soul can eventually experience God.
