In the philosophy of bhakti, the definition extends beyond mere rule breaking. Ultimately, both sin and virtue (paapa and punya) are viewed as forms of karmic bondage. Paapa binds the soul with "iron chains" of suffering, while punya binds the soul with "golden chains" in the form of temporary happiness in higher material realms (svarga), keeping the soul trapped in the cycle of birth and death (samsara). According to the scriptures, performing sadhana bhakti is the only way to completely redeem oneself, in addition to eradicating the tendency to perform paapa. Nevertheless, to maintain the physical body, one must perform material actions. Therefore, minimise them and maximise the amount of time spent practising devotion.
