Devanagari: फल्गु-वैराग्य ISO15919: phalgu vairāgya

False renunciation.

The word phalgu means false. The phrase, phalgu vairagya originates from the Phalgu River, situated in the holy city of Gaya in Bihar, India, that runs dry on the surface. Yet, if you dig a little, you can see the water. Similarly, one might live like a hermit in a forest, far away from all worldly pleasures, and yet mentally, that person might be thinking about his loved ones, a plush bed to sleep on, tasty food to eat and silken clothes to wear. Therefore, external renunciation of worldly pleasures is false renunciation.
