The very meaning of the word bhakti – derived from the root word, bhaj sevayam - is “to serve”. The Saints and scriptures speak of two types: sadhana bhakti or preparatory devotion that is practised to purify the heart completely to receive the second type of bhakti: siddha bhakti or perfect devotion, divine love or supreme bhakti. There are ten levels of bhakti that can be divided into three sections: sakama bhakti (selfish devotion), also called sadharani rati, samanjasa rati (a mixture of selfish and selfless devotion) and samartha rati (selfless or pure devotion). The jiva first needs to practise sadhana bhakti to become eligible to attain siddha bhakti. This bhakti can be practised using the four bhavas.
