A term that generally signifies succession or a tradition that is passed down from one generation to the next. It therefore carries two distinct meanings, depending on the context. Firstly, in a social context, it refers to family traditions, customs or lineage, and secondly, in a spiritual context, it denotes disciplic succession, that is, the uninterrupted chain of spiritual authority passed from a Guru to a disciple (guru-shishya parampara).
