In the philosophy of jnana yoga, a seeker must possess four specific qualifications, sadhana chatushtaya, to be eligible to practise the path of jnana. Shamadi shata sampatti is the third of these compulsory qualifications.
The six requisites comprise six mental and behavioral disciplines designed to stabilise the mind. They are: shama - control of the mind (inner calmness), dama - control of the external senses, uparati - withdrawal from worldly distractions (satiety), titiksha - forbearance or the ability to endure opposites (like heat and cold, pain and pleasure) without complaint, shraddha - unwavering faith in the Guru and the scriptures and samadhana - single-pointed concentration or focus of the mind on the divine.
